Manchester City are expecting an offer from Real Madrid for striker Sergio Aguero as the arrival of Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla will give the Spanish side new hope that they can tempt the Premier League runners up into selling the Argentine.
Aguero has been a long time pursuit of Madrid president Florentino Perez but he past career at arch rivals Atletico Madrid has hindered any approach for the 25 year old.
The player has signed a new deal at the club which sees him contracted until 2017 and has responded to increased speculation that he will join Los Blancos already this summer saying, “I’m very happy to be at Manchester City. I’m committed to them. It’s a great club.”
Madrid officials though feel that the time is right to bag their man as the signing of Negredo, to be confirmed in the next 24 hours, and the pursuit of Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic may cause Aguero to doubt his position in new boss Manuel Pellegrini’s plans.
The length of Aguero’s contract and his status as a club hero for securing their first title in 42 years by scoring in the final minute of the last game of the season against Queens Park Rangers to give them a 3-2 victory and the 2012 Premier League title.
Madrid though will not be deterred by the price as they are currently being frustrated by a lack of movement in their pursuit of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as the Merseysiders have yet to come back to them on the offer of cash plus Gonzalo Higuain for the Uruguayan as the Premier League club await further developments from other clubs and the players representatives before committing to any negotiations.
Any move for Aguero would be met with hostility by the City manager Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Txiki Begiristai have poor relations with Madrid since the former was unceremoniously dumped as manager and the latter enjoyed a tense relationship with the club while working with Barcelona.
Higuain is likely to move to Napoli it is now thought meaning Carlo Ancelotti will need to replace him and with Aguero likely to be fighting for his place amongst Negredo, Jovetic and Eden Dzeko, who has been singled out by Pellegrini and told he is part of his plans, the former Atletico man may feel it is time to move on.
Aguero joined City in 2011 for £38million pounds and may be tempted to move back to Madrid after his family recently returned to the city, preferring it to Manchester
