Manchester City are lining up a move for Gil Vicente defender Pecks.
The 20 year old starlet, full name is Pericles Santos Pereira, tops Manuel Pellegrini’s January wish-list following a glowing recommendation from City scouts.
The Cape Verde International has also been linked with move to Newcastle and Tottenham but City are confident of securing a deal as they have a partnership with the Portuguese side.
The price being quoted for the player is £8m although again City hope their relationship with the club will lead to the player moving for less than that with a sum closer to £5 million believed to be enough to secure the player.
Despite the interest from Premier League Gil Vicente president Antonio Fiusa has revealed that the club are in no rush to cash in and any club that want the defender will have to meet the buy-out clause, saying: “The player has a contract until 2017 and we do not have to sell at an inferior price.”
The tough-tackling centre-back has drawn comparisons to City skipper Vincent Kompany and given the impact the Belgian international has made in Manchester the tall and powerful Pecks would be a welcome addition to the Man City squad.
The deal to take Pecks to Manchester appears a much easier prospect then any potential move for Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala.
The highly rated 22 year old was believed to be a deadline day target for City but in the end Porto decided against completing a deal and it was thought that Pellegrini would try and push through a deal when the window re-opened.
However a deal appears less likely now with big spending Monaco and Chelsea both keeping tabs on the defender and are ready to rival any bid.
Claudio Ranieri’s side currently occupy top spot in Ligue after an impressive summer spending spree that saw Mangala’s former Porto colleagues James Rodriquez and Moutinho move to the Principality and with money to spend in January the former Standard Liege defender tops their list of targets.
Chelsea also hold a long-term interest in the French star and with doubts over the long-term future of David Luiz and John Terry nearing the end of his career Jose Mourinho is ready to break the bank to bring in the powerful defender.
That’s means that City will focus their attentions elsewhere making a move for Pecks very likely.
