While the Capital One cup may be down the list of priorities for Manuel Pellegrini, the former Real Madrid boss will have fond memories of the first trophy he collected as manager of the club.

Pellegrini’s side will have a big advantage over their visitors have already beaten the Magpies this season commencing their title defence with a 2-0 win at St James’ Park on the opening day of the season.

The defeat was the start of a 7 game winless run for Alan Pardew’s men, however the signs are that the club have turned the corner.

A 2-1 win over Spurs on Sunday was their second win in succession and moved the club up to the dizzy heights of 14th in the table.

The club are now unbeaten in their last three and with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal already knocked out of this year’s competition, Pardew will know that extending that run of form would put his side in with a chance of adding a trophy to their cabinet.

Both sides could make changes with City likely to bring the likes of Bacary Sagna, Willy Caballero, Martin Demichelis, Fernandinho, Stevan Jovetic and James Milner into the starting 11 while Newcastle whilst not boasting the vast collection of stars that Pellegrini has at his disposal will still be able to call upon the services of fringe stars Ryan Taylor, Sammy Ameobi, Remy Cabella and Massadio Haidara.

Cabella in particular will be keen for an appearance. The French star has struggled somewhat since moving to Newcastle but an assist for the winning goal against Spurs will give him loads of confidence.

The two met in the competition last season with City winning 2-0 at St James’ Park.
