Manchester United are reportedly close to completing a deal to sign Thiago Alcantra from Barcelona.
The Spanish under-21 captain has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer and United are as close to completing a deal as they have been.
It is well known that Thiago wants to play more regularly having been a peripheral figure at the Nou Camp since bursting onto the scene two years ago.
Manchester United are ready to match Barcelona’s valuation of the player and although the player recently tweeted he is off on his holiday’s, a deal could be struck soon.
United’s Achilles heel
Despite winning the Premier League in comprehensive fashion last season, Manchester United have been criticised for their lack of creative flair from central midfield.
Paul Scholes’s retirement leaves just Michael Carrick, Anderson and Darren Fletcher as real options.
Carrick aside, the other options are unable to stay free from injury and many have doubted whether they are good enough.
Having missed out on numerous creative players including Wesley Sneijder and Edin Hazard in previous windows, David Moyes is desperate to add quality to United’s midfield.
Thiago certainly would increase the play making options and given real game time could blossom into one of the worlds-best!
City won’t meet Cavani’s release clause
As for United’s city rivals, they aren’t willing to meet Napoli’s release clause of Edison Cavani according to President Aurelio de Laurentiis.
Speaking at a press conference to officially announce Rafael Benetiz as Napoli’s new manager, de Laurentiis confirmed City would not be bidding £54million for Cavani.
“Manchester City do not have money to pay for Cavani because they say we won’t pay that,” De Laurentiis said.
Cavani reportedly only has eyes on a move to Real Madrid, however they have been linked with numerous players including Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez.
Manchester City struggled for goals last campaign as they failed to defend their Premier League title and their forward line is expected to change next season.
Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko have been heavily linked with a move away from the club and the latter was reportedly offered as part of a deal to sign Cavani, however Napoli rejected.
Sergio Aguero recently signed a new deal at the Ethiad and is the only forward who is certain to remain at the club.
City have already been active in the transfer window bringing in Fernandinho and Jesus Navas as new manager Manuel Pellegrini looks to stamp his authority on the City squad.
