For the first time in 27 years Manchester United will head into a meaningful game without Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugout.

Chelsea are the visitors as David Moyes gets his first taste of a big fixture with his new team however there will be no time for sentiment with the Red Devils looking to avoid a scenario that would see them fall 6 points behind their rivals just 9 days into the new season.

United were impressive in patches as they got their campaign up and running last weekend with a 4-1 win over Swansea. Danny Welbeck and the prolific Robin Van Persie punishing the Swans with clinical proficiency.

Chelsea meanwhile have also scored four goals so far this season but over two games, a 2-0 win over Hull followed up by a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa.

Jose Mourinho’s side will head to Old Trafford in confident mood after their efficient work-man like opening 8 days to the season that saw the 6 points banked followed up the imminent captures of Willian and Samuel Eto’o.

Mourinho was one of the names linked the Old Trafford hot-seat prior to the appointment of Moyes especially given his relationship with his old foe Ferguson with the two sharing a mutual respect and a love of fine wines.

Ferguson was the king of the mind games whether it was other managers or referee’s and with the Scot gone it appears that Mourinho has taken on the mantle, given his very public love in with Wayne Rooney and his midweek exchange with Villa boss Paul Lambert.

David Moyes however appears well able for the “psychological warfare” and his declaration that Wayne Rooney has a “good chance of starting” on Monday night shows the tough not going to Stamford Bridge stance that United are taking in Chelsea’s pursuit of the England star.

Moyes is without a number of key players however with Rafael out for another 4 weeks with a hamstring injury along with Nani, Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez.

Phil Jones is set to continue at right back in place of Rafael while Rooney could feature in a three pronged attack alongside Danny Welbeck and Robin Van Persie with Valencia, Cleverly and Carrick in midfield.

Should Moyes decide to take a more defensive approach than the in-form Welbeck could drop to the bench with Ryan Giggs coming into the starting line-up.

Chelsea meanwhile will be without David Luiz while Romelu Lukaku could start up front.

The ‘Battle of Old Trafford’ kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
