There has been much speculation about whether Wayne Rooney will leave Manchester Untied this summer after falling behind Robin Van Persie in the starting line-up.
Chelsea have been the favourites to sign Rooney so far but the club have seen two cash offers for the player rejected in recent weeks.
But a real shock could be in the cards after comments from Jose Mourinho suggested that the club could be ready to swap Spanish star Juan Mata for Rooney in a straight switch.
Mata was one of the standout players in the Premier League last season and caught the eye of many top teams in Europe including United.
With the emergence of Hazard and Oscar over the past year and the arrival of other big names such as Willian and Marco van Ginkel, competition for places has never greater at Stamford Bridge.
This could force Mata to become a bargaining chip for Chelsea who are wanting to sign Rooney to spearhead their new attacking lineup. These rumours were fuelled further when Jose Mourinho told Metro: “But that old-fashioned mentality of, ‘I don’t sell players to clubs in the same country’ – I think doesn’t help.
“Sometimes you push players abroad when you should be keeping them in your league because then you are contributing to making your league the best league,” he added.
It would be a major surprise to see Mata leave Chelsea after the Spaniard turned out to be one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League last season.
In 35 games for The Blues, Mata netted 12 games and 17 assists earning him a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
It builds on a positive start that he had to the club in his debut season where the Spaniard scored 6 goals and created 17 more in 32 games.
With that sort of form, it’s not hard to see why Mata has been awarded the Player of the Year award by Chelsea Fans for the past 2 seasons.
So it would be surprising to see Chelsea to see one of their most consistent and popular players to be used as bait to lure a controversial figure such as Wayne Rooney to the club.
Therefore, Mourinho and Abramovich may need to think of a new strategy to lure Rooney to the club instead of swapping a star such as Juan Mata to a fierce title rival such as United.
