Third seed Maria Sharapova is cited as a 1/16 favourite to beat Italy’s Karin Knapp as the heat continues to cause dramas at the Australian Open.

Considering that she has spent the last few years living and training in Florida, it would be safe to assume that the heat isn’t something that fazes Maria Sharapova when she is on the court.

This doesn’t mean that things will be any easier when the third seed takes on Italy’s Karin Knapp in the second round of the Australian Open.

Sharapova, who won the tournament back in 2008, is looking back to her best after a comprehensive 6-3 6-4 win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday helping her avoid any first round upsets.

Having been affected by a serious shoulder injury last year, the former world number one has bounced back to some of her best form with only Serena Williams defeating Sharapova so far this year.

After winning on Tuesday, it means that Sharapova has now managed to avoid first round defeats in the last 15 Grand Slams with her last derailment occurring at the 2010 edition of the tournament.

Her opponent, Karin Knapp, is certainly an unknown quantity with the world number 41 only competing in her just her second Australian open in 5 years.

Still, it wasn’t enough to put the Italian off equalling her best form in Melbourne after beating Aregentina’s Paul Ormaechea 6-4 6-2 in the first round to set-up the clash.

At the moment, Knapp’s career has caught a second wind of somewhat as she managed to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon last year as well making the third round of the US Open for the first time back in September.

It’s something that will certainly spur Knapp on to try and make an impact now considering that she’s in the best form of her career since 2008.

The two have met once before on the professional tour at the 2008 French Open where Maria Sharapova emerged victorious in the third round winning the game 7-6 6-0.

This will certainly give Sharapova confidence going into the game as she hopes to avoid any heat exhaustion and continue on her quest to win her first Grand Slam in 2 years.
