face an Everton side that is 9 points and two places above them on Sunday knowing that a win would make the Toffee’s chances of claiming a Champions league spot rescind another little bit.
Having moved into pole position for a top four spot on the back of seven successive wins, the Blues came crashing down to earth midweek when they lost 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace.
The defeat coupled with Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham United 24 hours earlier meant that Roberto Martinez’s side dropped to fifth in the standings.
Despite their destiny now being out of their hands, Martinez wants his side to focus on their own game and not to worry about Arsenal.
“This game is probably our biggest of the season,” he said.“We know how vital the three points are and that is our only concern.
“Obviously it’s glamorous to see the champions at Goodison and it’s great to welcome the figures that we’re going to welcome and the quality of the players.
“But the three points in this period for us as a football club are more important than any aspect you can highlight in the fixture – and I think that speaks volumes of what an impressive season it’s been so far. I think the biggest compliment we can pay to ourselves is that the three points at this moment are more important than all the aspects that you can mention.
“There are lots of interesting angles in this game but we’re going to concentrate on the fact that the only important thing on Sunday is how well we can perform over 90 minutes and how successful we can be at the end of the game.”
Martinez is set to recall James McCarthy to the starting line up after the midfielder started the game with Crystal Palace on the bench. The Irish International was struggling with a muscular injury prior to that game but managed 30 minutes midweek and is set to start on Sunday.
Defender Phil Jagielka could be on the bench after overcoming a hamstring injury however Darron Gibson, Steven Pienaar and Arouna Kona will be missing.
Manchester United will have former Blues Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney available after recent injuries however Robin Van Persie misses out.
