United to beat Inter and City to Ajax defender

Manchester United late summer drive shows no sign of slowing day as names continue to be linked with the club.

The £59.7 million deal for Angel di Maria appears to have open the floodgates at Old Trafford with a host of arrivals and departures expected before Monday.

Whilst the majority of those linked are big names, quick fixes such as Arturo Vidal and Daley Blind, United manager Louis Van Gaal is also thinking of the future.

The Dutch coach has returned to his homeland to snap up 16-year-old Ajax defender Timothy Fosu Mensah.

The highly rated starlet was at the club’s training ground in Carrington midweek to finalise his deal and will complete the transfer in the coming days.

United are set to pay £300,000 for Mensah, a player that caught the eye in Ajax’s AEGON Future Cup tournament win in April

As is always the case with bright young talent, United were not alone in the chase for the teenager with the club fending off bids from cross city rivals City and Inter Milan to bring in the versatile player.

The physically imposing Mensah can play at left back, centre back or as a defensive midfielder with his versatility very appealing to Van Gaal as he implements his 3-5-2 ethos on United.

Mensah is the third left side player to arrive at the club this summer following in the footsteps of Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.
