Louis van Gaal has stated that the Italian full back will have to fight for his place in the starting XI and will be a back up to Antonio Valencia
Despite paying Torino 12.7 pounds for the services of the Italy international, it appears that the player will have to earn his place in the starting XI after Louis van Gaal stated that he still sees Antonio Valencia as his first choice right back for next season.
The Ecuador international has been really consistent in the last few months and Van Gaal wants Darmian to prove his worth to the squad before anything else.
“On last year’s US tour I had to line up the players in positions different to what they are used to playing which is not good.
“Now for every position I have two players.
“Normally they play in their own position but nevertheless Paddy McNair had to play right full back in the first tour game and that is not his position.
“He can do it but it’s not his position and that is football because Antonio Valencia was injured.”
