The Manchester United manager has warned the club’s number 1 that he will have to fight for his place in the starting XI
It appears that Louis van Gaal may have initiated the circumstances for David de Gea to leave Old Trafford for good following the signing of Sergio Romero. The Argentine joined the Red Devils yesterday as a free agent and many see the former Sampdoria man as a replacement for the Spanish international who has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
However, with nothing happening on that front, De Gea might be forced to stay at Old Trafford for another year but this time around, will have competition for the starting role according to his manager.
He told reporters: “In our circumstances, with the threat that De Gea is going to Real Madrid, we have to prepare our season and I think Sergio Romero can fulfil that.
“You have to handle the situation very quickly if it [a move to Real Madrid] may happen with De Gea.
“I have of course spoken with Sergio and also with David and, with me, always the best shall be in the line-up. So you have to fight and I think in a top club as Manchester United, you need always competition.”
