The England and Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney wore Everton’s colours for the first time since 2004 in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial at Goodison Park.
The United skipper moved from Everton to Old Trafford in August 2004 for a transfer fee of £25.6m. Now after 11 years, he donned the Merseyside club’s shirt again in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial. Rooney came on as a substitute in the final 15 minutes, wearing his old 18 number shirt.
“I was delighted with the fans’ reaction,” Rooney said after the game.
“I didn’t know what to expect but it was great for me and my kids, to see me once in an Everton shirt. It brought back some good old memories.
“I enjoyed it. It is nice to come back here and the fans gave me a great reception which obviously I was delighted with.”
Everton lost this match 2-1 to Spanish side Villarreal.
