Manchester United veteran signs new deal

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand signed a new one-year contract today, which results in him staying at the club for his 12th season.

The former England international was a massive part of Manchester United’s title winning season this year, winning his sixth Premier League medal and has now racked up 432 appearances since he joined the club in 2002

Newly appointed manager David Moyes said on “It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room, so I am delighted he has signed a new contract. I am looking forward to working with him.

Rio Ferdinand said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week? It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career which has worked well for me over the past few years.”

“This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club.”

Ferdinand infamously scored a last minute winner against Swansea in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game at Old Trafford, which his first goal in 8 years for the club.

The former England skipper was also named in the PFA team of the year after an outstanding season where he played in 34 league games.

It was rumoured the Ferdinand was set to leave the club on a free transfer after Manchester United were unsure whether to offer the player a new deal, however after an impressive season they were left with no other choice.

Ferdinand has been the centre of controversy this season following his drop from the International scene, fines for Twitter outbursts, driving bans and finally his International retirement.

At 34-years-old, it was believed that Ferdinand was ready to take a step down and move to the MLS with LA Galaxy rumoured to be interested in him and Frank Lampard.

However both of these players have now signed one year deal extensions this week and will stay at their clubs.

Rio Ferdinand has formed a strong partnership with club captain Nemanja Vidic and have been named as a partnership in the PFA Team of the year three times.

Changes are expected with David Moyes’ imminent arrival at Old Trafford, with Wayne Rooney amongst others expected to leave the club.

However, there is many other players expected to join the Red Devils, with Robert Lewandowski, Leighton Baines, Cesc Fabregas and Cristiano Ronaldo all being linked with the club.

United have already lost a group of legends this summer with Paul Scholes and Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and are delighted that they have been able to stop another one from leaving.
