Manchester United have reportedly had a bid for Everton defender Leighton Baines turned down.
Baines has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and talk of a move intensified following the appointment of David Moyes as the new United Manager.
Sky Sports are now reporting that a bid has materialised but it has been rejected by the Merseysider’s who insist the defender is not for sale at any price.
Reports are suggesting that United’s opening bid for the England International was between £10million and £12million and the club’s determination to keep the player will be severely tested should Moyes return with an improved offer.
Everton are likely to re-buff United’s attempts to sign the defender and will instead use the opportunity to tie down Baines to new and improved contract.
The 27-year-old former Wigan star has emerged as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League in recent seasons and was named on the PFA’s team of the season last year.
Despite his consistent performances in a blue shirt Baines has yet to break Ashley Cole’s strangle hold on the English left back spot winning 17 caps to date.
Baines scored 5 goals and assisted another 5 in 38 Premier League games last season to help Everton to 6th spot in the table and his departure would come as a serious blow to new manager Roberto Martinez.
Baines recently admitted he was looking forward to working with the former Wigan boss, “We’ve chatted on the phone. It was just about speaking about the start of the season and looking forward to working with each other. Anyone you speak to only says great things about him.”
A move for Baines would raise serious question marks over the future of current left back Patrice Evra.
The French star was one of United’s star players last season adding goals to his repertoire but with Monaco sniffing around the player not to mention the fact that player recently turned 32 United could be tempted to offload the 48 times capped International.
United also have Alex Buttner on their books and it remains to be seen what impact the arrival of Baines would have for the 24 year old. The former Vitesse Arnhem defender joined United last summer but struggled to dislodge Evra making only 5 appearances in the Premier League.
He did however score 2 goals and provide one assist to suggest that he has the potential to become a star at Old Trafford.
