Arsene Wenger remained tight-lipped over any potential signings he will make before the transfer window shuts next Monday by saying Arsenal will only recruit ‘special’ players.
The manager who has been rebuffed by Liverpool all summer during his attempted signing of Luis Suarez has also failed to land Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Gustavo can now add Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to the list of players who have turned him down.
The French international has been linked along with Angel Di Maria to be targets of Arsenal as they look to add strength to their attacking line up but his agent yesterday dismissed any suggestion that the former Lyon would be departing the Bernabeu this summer by revealing that he is in talks to sign a three year extension to his contract.
Benzema was linked with a move away from the nine time European champions as fans have been vocal in their disapproval with performances this season but the player is known to be a favourite of president Florentino Perez and his agent says that he will not be leaving the club.
“We can not fight against the rumours, but I assure you Karim will not go to Arsenal. There has never been any discussions and no contact has been established,” Karim Djaziri said.
“We are working on a contract extension for three years. Discussions are taking place quietly, without deadline. Karim could well end his career at Real, the club of his dreams.”
Wenger refused to mention any names during his press conference ahead of the second leg of their Champions League qulifying clash with Fernabache who they lead 3-0 but said that he has players in mind.
“We have not a fixed number (of signings in mind). I just think we are a bit short at the moment. I’m guided by my conscience to do as well as I can for this club and by the vision of the game I want to play,” he said.
“I feel with the players I have I can play the football we want to play. I’m a great admirer of the spirit, the attitude of these players. “They are special and if I want to add something it has to be special.”
One player who the Frenchman is known to be in pursuit of is Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye as the player’s manager Alan Pardew criticised the manner of the approach for the player ahead of the team’s match last Monday.
Cabaye was left out of the Newcastle squad at the weekend as the player told Pardew that he was not in the right frame of mind to play since learning of Arsenal’s bid.
