Wenger wants Higuain as signal of intent to other targets

Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal from real Madrid as soon as possible to send a signal of intent to other players that he means business this season.

Higuain has been given permission to speak to the Gunners by Madrid but the two clubs are yet to finalise a price for the 24 year old Argentine with Arsenal refusing to meet the £21million price tag placed on the striker.

Despite his reputation for frugality over transfers Wenger is keen to get the deal tied up in the next week so that he can move on with his squad building wit the belief that the move will generate an aura of ambition about the club and previously rejected bids for Lyon”s Clement Grenier and Bayer Leverkusen”s Lars Bender can be renegotiated.

Grenier has said he is open minded about his future after Lyon rejected Read more about drug hair test ing »We provide specific drug hair test ing packages based on the most commonly used drugs as well as specific testing on request. a £6million bid for the 22 year old midfielder who has been likened to Samir Nasri by Wenger.

“I know Lyon have rejected an offer from Arsenal. Of course it”s flattering that clubs are interested in me,” Grenier told French press this week.

“It”s hard for me to talk about my future now because I”m not yet certain of it. I prefer to wait to be 100% sure of what is going to happen before I do it.

“I do not know where my future lies. I”m not 100 per cent sure of what I want to do. I look forward to this meeting to be certain.”

The capture of Bender will require more than agitation from the player though as Bayer”s president will hold out for many times more than the £18.5million Arsenal offered last month as the Bundesliga side have already sold André Schürrle to Chelsea and Dani Carvajal to Real Madrid this summer.

Wenger had hoped to bring in the 24 year old and a goalkeeper along with a high profile striker so as to rebuild the spine of his team but has been rebuffed.

If Higuain does make the switch Wenger feels that it may have the knock on of showing Bayer that it is worth negotiating a deal with the notoriously frugal Gunners but if the deal is to come off it will likely mean that the North Londoners will have broken their previous transfer record twice in one summer.

With a transfer kitty close to £75million Wenger could bring in all three players but it remains to be seen how comfortable the manager is paying inflated prices.
