The authorities have implemented a new format for the UK champs this season with all 128 players entering at the first-round stages, including seven amateurs.
The top 16 players have lost their protection in ranking events, having previously gone through automatically to the last-32 stage. With this format, some of the big guns could be in for a giant-killing against fired up lowly ranked players looking to make a name for themselves.
This means that the top-four Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson and Ding Junhui face up against players ranked 64 or lower the world.
There has hardly been any shocks thus far as the higher ranked players have come through their matches easily, and unfortunately for boss Barry Hearn, that looks to be on the cards in this latest round of fixtures.
Offering unknown qualifiers the chance to make a name for themselves is all well and good, but such is the quality of the top players, the gap between them and amateur level is extraordinary.
The big-four’s opponents Rhys Clark, Shane Castle, Dylan Mitchell and Antony Parsons have never made it past the first round in a competition of this magnitude and punters should be concentrating on very one sided correct score betting and perhaps a frame handicap bet or two.
Junhui is scheduled to take on Antony Parsons and is trading at 1/33 to win the match, but such will be his dominance, punters should get on the 6-0 correct score punt at 7/2.
O’Sullivan should do the same to Clark while Selby should be backed at 9/2 to beat Castle 6-0. The only one of the four that my struggle slightly is Robertson, who has been away from competitive matches in order to prepare fully for this tournament.
He may take his time to get into the swing of things against Mitchell and the underdog should be backed at 4/5 to win two or more frames.
For punters wishing to catch the action live online, don’t forget you can watch all the action from York and the UK Snooker Championships with Bet365 and their exclusive streams.
