The Spaniard had a tricky time off it against the world number 17 and was called for multiple time violations throughout the encounter.

After straight forward wins over Gael Monfils, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Bernard Tomic, in which he dropped just 18 games, the clash with Nishikori will have given Nadal a timely reminder of the need to be at his best.

Dimitrov meanwhile has already made history becoming the first Bulgarian to reach the quarter-final of a grand slam competition. The world number 22, boyfriend of Maria Sharapova , beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to seal his place in the last 8.

The Bulgarian, who has lost all three of his previous meetings with Nadal, said: “I’m really happy to be out there in the quarter-finals but I’m not even close to satisfaction. We all know that he has won tons of slams. He’s been a tremendous competitor. He’s Rafa. We all know him”

“But, again, I just want to put myself — that’s what I’m playing for, to put myself in a position to play those guys. I had tough battles with him in the past, played a couple times on clay. There were always little things missing. But I’m quite happy with the way I’m performing so far. So I like my chances.”

The 22 year olds previous best at a Grand Slam event came in the 2013 French Open when he made it to the third round. 2013 was a real breakthrough year for Dimitrov as he claimed a first ATP tour title, the Stockholm Open in October.
