Head Spin looks a horse on the up at Southwell and he should be backed with bulky stakes today in the £10 Free Bet At 32RedSport.com Handicap Chase (1:35).
Seamus Mullins’ six-year-old was one of the luckiest winners of the year at this course last time as the long odds-on favourite was clear when falling and the horse who looked set to take advantage stopped to a walk. So although he was a last time out winner, it was hard to get too excited by his victory. That was certainly the view of the handicapper, who has left him on a mark of 82 for this race.
That gives him a vital edge today in a contest that won’t take much winning. Unlike his rivals, Head Spin is a sound jumper and should get round on ground that he likes. That should be enough to land the spoils.
Meanwhile, and huge news broke overnight in flat racing as Godolphin announced that William Buick and James Doyle have been snapped up as retained riders by the boys in the blue.
Doyle will join up as first jockey for Saeed Bin Suroor after his one-year contract with Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte comes to an end next month, while Buick will leave a prime job with John Gosden and take over as top rider for Charlie Appleby.
In the major reshuffle, Silvestre De Sousa, who won the Dubai World Cup on African Story for Godolphin in March, has not had his contract renewed for next year but Mickael Barzalona, who won the St Leger in 2012 with Camelot, will continue to ride for Godolphin in France.
Buick’s decision to leave Gosden is a rather surprising one considering the level of power the trainer has with his string of horses. The pair registered huge success with the likes of Dar Re Mi, The Fugue, Arctic Cosmos, Masked Marvel, Nathaniel, Elusive Kate, Great Heavens and Sultanina in their time together but Buick saw this as an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
He said: “I have been very fortunate to have been employed by John Gosden since I completed my apprenticeship and without his faith and wise counsel I would not be in the position that I am in today to take what is, in my opinion, the most coveted position in world racing.”
It now means both Gosden and Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation are looking for new riders with Adam Kirby and George Baker likely to be among the favourites to take one of the new roles.
