Moyes retains confidence in current Manchester United squad

It may feel like the Cesc Fabregas move is slipping away from him and Wayne Rooney’s future at Old Trafford looks far from certain, but Manchester United manager David Moyes had plenty to cheer about after his sides pre-season friendly win over Kitchee FC.

The 5-2 victory in Hong Kong came courtesy of goals from Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling, Fabio Da Silva, Adnan Januzaj and Jesse Lingard.

Moyes said in the aftermath of the win:  “A couple of the young lads, Adnan and Jesse Lingard, who I didn’t know as much about, did well and Wilfried Zaha, who has just joined, he has shown what he is capable of in the games he has played.

“I think they will go away from the trip feeling they have contributed to it.

“I am taking away the great experience of my first trip with Manchester United in general and what the football club means around the world.

“I have also had a chance to get to know the players and try to settle into my new environment and for the players to get to know me as well

“They have been working with a great manager for a long time a lot of them, so it is going to take time.

“But I have really enjoyed working with them. They have been incredibly professional.

“I can see why they are champions because of the way they conduct themselves and go about their business. I have been very impressed.”

Experienced defender Rio Ferdinand has also spoken positively about the future of the current side.

The ex-England international said:  “We’re confident. If we had to go into the season with the players that we’ve got now I’d be more than confident and with high hopes of doing well and winning trophies.  If the manager adds to that and chooses to add to that, then great – but it remains to be seen.”

When Moyes was asked about whether United are going to make another offer for Fabregas, he said:  “I couldn’t tell you if there will be another bid. Obviously we will take stock of it and consider what we are going to do next.

“I never at any time said I knew we would get him. I just said we had made offers.

“But what we have here is a really good squad of players already. You mustn’t forget about the quality that is already here at Manchester United.

“Undoubtedly we are hoping to add to it. I am quite confident we will do, certainly before the window shuts.”
