Manchester City make their Champions League debut tonight in the hope that they can continue their majestic early season form.
Napoli – also making their Champions League debut – are the visitors to the Etihad Stadium and with the firepower at Roberto Mancini’s disposal, a home success looks on the cards, despite a few selection concerns for City.
England midfielders Gareth Barry and James Milner are both doubtful through injury, Nigel De Jong is still out with a foot problem and controversial forward Mario Balotelli is suspended.
But Mancini has a squad rich with talent and they should still have too much for their Italian counterparts in Europe’s premier competition. City have been simply awesome so far in the Barclays Premier League and with David Silva pulling the strings in the midfield and Sergio Aguero the goal threat up front, they look like scoring every time they attack.
While City chief Mancini does have the odd injury worry in midfield, he has no such problem at the business end of the pitch and with Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko all available, it gives the Italian a headache of the right kind.
For the Naples club, Marek Hamsik will return to the starting line-up after being used as a substitute against Cesena. Elsewhere, Blerim Dzemaili is expected to be make way in midfield, with Uruguayan Walter Gargano coming in alongside Gokhan Inler.
The contest kicks off at 19:45 and it promises to be an entertaining encounter. Life is never dull at the Etihad Stadium and you have to say that their squad is now one of the strongest in Europe.
The long-suffering City faithful – remember that they were in the third tier of English football not so long ago – finally having something to shout about. Their message is simple – bring it on!
