Everton will be out to build on their dominant display over Lille when they travel to the North East to face Sunderland.

Roberto Martinez watched on as his side beat the French side, 3-0 on Thursday in their Europa league clash to extend their European unbeaten run to four games.

With the club unbeaten in their last three games in the league, a run that has moved them up to 9th in the table as a result, a slow start to the season has long been consigned to the back of the mind.

Last time out in the league they drew 0-0 with Swansea. That was the first time since April that the toffees had failed to score in a league game and it was also just their third clean sheet of the season.

On Sunday they face a Sunderland side that climbed to 15th in the table midweek with a 3-1 win away to Crystal Palace. It was just the club’s 2nd win in their last five games.

Guy Poyet’s side boasts the third worst defence in the league, although an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of Southampton in game week 8 has distorted the good work of John O’Shea and co.

The poor recent form of Vito Mannone saw Costel Pantilmon come in for his debut against Palace and the former Manchester City shot stopper is once again be between the sticks on Sunday.

Jack Rodwell could come back into the squad after missing the win over Palace with a knock however Patrick van Aanholt is out after being stretchered off with a dislocated shoulder on Monday.

Ricardo Alvarez is edging closer to a return to action but the game with Everton could be too soon.

Everton for their part will be without Antolin Alcaraz, John Stones and Kevin Mirallas however Gareth Barry, Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo could make the up to Sunderland. Darron Gibson returned to the squad for the game with Lille and will be involved.
