Cagliari Lazio as Stefano Mauri linked to Tottenham

Ahead of this weekend’s tip to Cagliari, Lazio midfielder Stefano Mauri has been once again linked with a move to the Premier League.

Reports are suggesting that Tottenham is the most likely destination for the 31-year-old, with the player’s agent confirming that there has been interest from English clubs.

However, Tiziano Gonzaga also revealed that Mauri is happy at Lazio for now and is focused on having a successful campaign with the Italian giants.

He said: “I cannot deny the rumours coming from England. I have always given club president Claudio Lotito the opportunity to deal with other clubs and then, once the agreement may be reached, to let me know.”

“I think that it is unlikely Lotito would deny Stefano. Could he go abroad? It is something that could be taken into account, but he feels a major player with Lazio.”

All in all it sounds like Mauri would consider a move to England, but only if he is guaranteed first-team football. He would not want to throw away the opportunity he has at Lazio to sit on the bench somewhere else.

There will perhaps be more developments on this when the January transfer window opens. Then, Tottenham – or any other intested clubs – can make their move.

For now though, Mauri is very much a Lazio player and he will be hoping to help the team to three points at Cagliari this weekend.

As things stand in Serie A, Lazio are currently third after only losing once in the opening eight games of the campaign. They suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Catania last time out though, so they will be aiming to return to winning ways this weekend.

As for Cagliari, they have had a decent start to the new season. They sit sixth at the moment and victory over Lazio would see them go above their visitors, so there is plenty of motivation for them to raise their game.

They have drawn their last three games though – with two of them ending goalless – so they will have to find their form in front of goal if they are to get the better of Mauri and Lazio.

This one gets underway at 7.45pm this evening.
