Nobody wants to go into the two-week gap in domestic fixtures with a defeat and this adds extra significance to every single game this weekend.
In fairness though, there is so much to play for right now that each goal, each point and certainly each game is vital to a team’s progress this year.
For example, we may only be ten games into the campaign, but if Chelsea slip up and Manchester City win, is the 12-point gap too big for Andre Villas-Boas’ men to make up?
This weekend’s action begins at St James’ Park as Newcastle host Everton in the Saturday lunch-time kick-off. Now, if any team has taught us to expect the unexpected this season, it is Alan Pardew’s men.
They sit third in the table after an unbeaten start to the campaign and they will be desperate to keep this run going against an Everton side that would love three points to propel them towards the top half.
After this lunchtime game, there are five 3pm games on Saturday afternoon. The pick of which is arguably Liverpool v Swansea. If you want a good spectacle, this should be just that. Both teams like to push forward and there should be goals.
Another stand out Saturday fixture is Blackburn v Chelsea. Both teams need the points, no doubt about that. The Blues need to keep the pressure on the Manchester clubs, while Blackburn need to avoid getting cast adrift at the bottom.
It could be a scrappy affair at Ewood Park, but it won’t be short of incident. One goal could be enough to win it.
The other three 3pm kick-offs on Saturday see Aston Villa host Norwich, Arsenal at home to West Brom and Premier League Champions Manchester United face Sunderland at Old Trafford.
Then, in arguably the game of the weekend, Queens Park Rangers host Chelsea on Saturday evening. This is going to be action-packed, there are going to be goals and it should be a cracker at Loftus Road.
Moving onto Sunday, it starts with struggling Wolves at home to struggling Wigan and is followed by Bolton – who have lost every home game this season – against Stoke City at the Reebook Stadium.
The action then finishes with a Super Sunday at Craven Cottage. Fresh from their European win in the week, Fulham host a Tottenham side ready to welcome back the big boys after resting players for the Europa League. Back goals in this one!
Overall, another cracking weekend in store!
