With the arrival of Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers imminent, Sir Alex Ferguson has set his sights on his next transfer target with Ashley Young ready to move to Old Trafford.
Aston Villa have reportedly given up hope of keeping the midfielder and Manchester United could tie up a £16m deal this week.
Young had been in discussions with Villa chairman Randy Lerner about his future, but this failed to change the player’s mind about leaving the club and he should be a Manchester United player before long.
The 25-year-old would like to seal the deal before he gets married on Saturday, so this one could move along very quickly.
There is no reason why it shouldn’t either with Villa accepting they have to sell, Manchester United desperate to buy and the player clearly keen on this progressive career move.
Following some excellent performances for Aston Villa over the last couple of years, Young has emerged as an England regular of late and he scored in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland at Wembley.
Ferguson is a big fan of the former Watford man and will back him to improve as a player even further at Old Trafford.
Young will be relishing the opportunity too. At 25-years-old he is ready for this big move and for the Champions League football that comes with it.
If he can have a good season for United in 2011/2012, perhaps winning a trophy or two, it will set him up nicely for the European Championships with England next summer.
With his wedding and a move to the Premier League champions imminent this week, it will certainly go down as one of the better few days for Ashley Young.
He has worked hard to get there though and his talent deserves a shot in a team that will be challenging for all major honours next season.
