Coming as one of the more surprising transfer stories of the summer so far, Liverpool have made an ambitious £5m bid for Arsenal’s Gael Clichy.
Following the frustration of missing out on Phil Jones to Manchester United, Kenny Dalglish is keen to strengthen his defence and believes that the acquisition of the Frenchman would be an excellent move for the club.
The Scotsman has previously cast an eye over Newcastle’s Luis Enrique and Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre, but he sees Clichy is the best option as he looks to address the full-back problem at Anfield.
Any move and subsequent transfer fee will certainly be helped by the fact that Clichy only has one year remaining on his current Arsenal contract. He rejected a new deal recently and the Gunners might look to cash in on the 25-year-old this summer.
That said, the £5m transfer fee still seems rather low when you consider how much Premier League football Clichy has played for a man of his age. His form may not have been quite as good in the last season or two, but he is a very talented footballer.
Perhaps he needs a fresh start to get his career going again. Whether remaining in the Premier League with Liverpool is the best option remains to be seen as there are bound to be interested clubs from all over Europe.
For now, all parties wait Arsenal’s verdict on Liverpool’s £5m bid. Then, some more concrete decisions can be made. We will of course keep you updated on this.
Elsewhere, there are plenty of other rumours doing the rounds with regards to Arsenal. Clichy may possibly be on the way out, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gary Cahill, Chris Samba and Lille’s Eden Hazard could be on the way in.
