The Gunners have turned their season around after an atrocious start, and now know that a win against their German opponents on Wednesday would all but seal their place in the knockout round as group winners ahead of nearest rivals Marseille.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger faces a mounting injury list for the game, and will be somewhat short of defenders after Bacasry Sagna, Carl Jenkinson and Keiran Gibbs were all ruled out of the game through injury, and while Jack Wilshere is making excellent progress in his rehabilitation from the injury that was meant to keep him out of action until the new year, the game against Dortmund comes a little too soon or the midfield maestro.
Their defensive problems mean that Laurent Koscielny will deputise at right back in place of the injured Gibbs.
For Dortmund, defender Patrick Owomoyela’s return from injury against Bayern Munich over the weekend provided a real boost having been out of action since October, and he should be fit to start against the Gunners.
Marcel Schmelzer also made a similar comeback to action over the weekend and is available for selection, but manager Juergen Klopp will be unable to call upon the services of Neven Subotic, who is expected to be out until the new year with a fractured cheekbone.
While Arsenal have an excellent record against German sides in Europe having won nine of their last 11 meetings with German sides, the record between the Gunners and Dortmund is finely balanced, with both sides picking up a win and a draw each in their four encounters – but crucially Arsenal have lost only one of their last 36 games at home in the Champions League.
