After winning an epic encounter with James Wade early on Monday morning to book a place in the PDC World Championship Darts final, Adrian Lewis simply stated ‘that’s why I’m Champion’, with Paddy Power making Lewis favourite
Defending his title, Lewis looked all set to be knocked out at the semi-final stage. The crowd were against him, he was 5-1 down and after leaving the stage a few times because of an off putting breeze, it appeared that he wasn’t focused enough on the job in hand.
However, showing excellent spirit, Lewis won 10 legs in a row to come out with a 6-5 victory as Wade was left to consider what might have been. Lewis will now take on fellow Stoke player Andy Hamilton in tonight’s final.
Speaking after last night’s epic, Lewis said: “That was the best win of my career, definitely. But that shows why I am world champion.”
“That shows why I am the champion. There’s no reason why I will not retain my title. I am the best in the world.”
Lewis will no doubt look to take this confidence into his clash with Hamilton this evening, with the biggest prize in darts awaiting the winner.
Hamilton – who produced a semi-final fightback of his own to defeat Simon Whitlock 6-5 – is bound to have the more vocal support from the crowd and he admits everything is extremely emotional.
Ahead of tonight’s final, the ‘Hammer’ said: “I’m quite emotional, I’m speechless. Simon pushed me so hard, I had to take those checkouts out to win the game.”
“There’s one game left now and if I grit my teeth and fight, I could win it.”
Lewis will no doubt be favourite though as these two Stoke players look to recover from mentally draining semi-final wins to be crowned the 2012 PDC World Darts Champion.
Alexandra Palace is set to be rocking as this eagerly anticipated final gets underway at 8pm.
