Tottenham to raid Basel for Xherdan Shaqiri

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp may have a court-case to deal with at the moment but it hasn’t stopped him from eyeing up a marquee signing before the transfer window is out.

The Spurs boss is stepping up his interest in Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri after his proposed move from FC Basel to Galatasaray collapsed.

The deal broke down because Basel are reportedly holding out for around £20 million and the Turks could only go to around the £12m mark.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has been attracting attention from some of the world’s biggest clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan but no concrete offers have been tabled to the Swiss champions as yet.

This has reportedly sent Redknapp pulse racing as he is a big admirer of the player and has allegedly been given the green light by Chairman Daniel Levy to make a substantial bid for the player.

The former Southampton boss has gone on record saying he isn’t expecting to do much business this January but would be open to the idea of signing a special player, which, Shaqiri certainly is.

He has also has been critical of his side’s inability to create chances from set-pieces this season and reportedly feels that the Swiss international could be the perfect player to fill that void.

Shaqiri has a wand of a left foot and has showcased his talents in the Champions League this season in a Basle side that qualified for the last 16 of the tournament, knocking out Manchester United in the process. He was sensational the night Basle beat United 2-1, playing in a free-role he ran the midfield and set up both the goals in the victory.
