QPR veteran Shaun Derry has allegedly been told he can leave the club on a free transfer with Aston Villa reportedly showing a firm interest.
New QPR manager Mark Hughes had placed a block on unwanted players leaving the club but now he has got some of his chosen targets in, he is willing to move the likes of Derry move on.
Villa have allegedly emerged as the surprise front-runners for the 34-year-old’s signature in a deal that would be about as uninspiring as it gets for Villa fans – who are already frustrated with Alex McLeish’s management of the club.
It is rumoured that the Scotsman is looking to bring in an experienced head, who can add some much needed steel to a side that does have some good technical midfield players but lack the ball-winning skills that a player like Derry possesses.
If a move to another Premier League club does materialise then it represents a huge turnaround for Derry in a career that looked as it was coming to an end at Crystal Palace just 18 months ago.
Derry was bought by Neil Warnock at QPR in 2010 and considering the form he had showed at Palace the deal looked a strange one at the time. But galvanised by his new surroundings Derry went on to have the best season of his career, being a mainstay in the side that won promotion to the Premier League.
Chances this season have been limited but he has still racked up 15 appearances in the Premier League and hasn’t looked out of place when given his chance.
However with QPR are set to announce the signing of defensive midfielder Samba Diakite today on loan, Derry’s time at Rangers looks to be up.
