Lyon v APOEL Nicosia Tues 19:45
One of the surprise outfits to make it to the Champions League Round of 16 this year, Apoel Nicosia are tasked with a tough trip to the Stade de Gerland on Tuesday as Paddy Power make them long odds against as they seek to continue their European run in the Champions League.
The Cypriots will be looking to extend Lyon’s streak of games without a victory to three, the latest result of which being a home loss to Ligue 1 outfit, Caen.
Lyon barely made it past the group stage, leaving it to a 7-1 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb to go through on goal difference.
Apoel did well to top Group G ahead of Zenit St. Petersburg, Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto and Remi Garde’s Lyon would be foolish to discount them as easy opposition.
Neither side has any serious injury concerns to worry about and while Alton will lead the attack for Apoel, Bafetimbi Gomis and Lisandro Lopez will be starting up top for Lyon.
One man who was unhappy at particularly unhappy with Saturday’s league defeat was Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas who spoke to the club’s website, saying:
“It is a disappointment. We’re coming down to earth with a bump. We have to look into what went wrong and use this for the Champions League on Tuesday. We have to question ourselves on all levels.”
Both manager’s tactics will be vital in what promises to be a tight encounter on Tuesday and while Jovanovic would love to nick an away goal from the first leg, his first priority could well be simply to not concede.
While other fixtures will undoubtedly prove more enticing for some to watch, these fixtures can often produce the more free-flowing matches that are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
