Standard Liege v Wisla Krakow 18:00 Thurs
The Belgian side were ultimately unfortunate not to come away from last week match with a victory, but Standard Liege will be looking to set the record straight as Stan James make them heavy odds on favourites when they play hosts to Wisla Krakow on Thursday.
Liege took a 1-0 lead within twenty minutes when the two sides met in the reverse fixture last week and the visitors held out for the vast majority of the match but eventually succumbed to an 88th minute equaliser, courtesy of Tsvetan Genkov.
It will be Wisla’s turn to be visitors this week but Kasimierz Moskal face the unenviable trial of penetrating the defence of Standard Liege when the pair clash once more.
Standard don’t seem set to finish as high in the Jupiler League as last season’s second placed finish, struggling to cope with the demands of multiple competitions as both these sides have struggled for domestic form as they approach tonight’s game.
Les Rouches are currently without a win in three matches however, giving their Polish opposition subtle comfort heading into the fixture.
José Riga’s side will make keeping a clean sheet their main priority this week, holding onto the away lead they picked up in Poland.
Although Wisla Krakow have progressed well in this campaign’s Europa League, their domestic form has suffered as they currently sit sixth in the Ekstraklasa, and look unlikely to hold onto their Polish title.
Coach Kazimierz Moskal, however is optimistic his side can cope with the hostile atmosphere of Stade Maurice Dufrasne, but will be wary that Liege have had the best defensive records in the competition, and his Krakow side have already conceded 14 goals in the competiton.
Hannover or Club Brugge will await the winner of the tie.
