With both Manchester clubs heading into their Europa League fixtures as the losing sides on Thursday, Sporting Lisbon will travel to the Etihad Stadium at long odds with Bet365 hoping to finish the job they started against their Premier League opponents last week.
Manchester City slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the Estádio José Alvalade courtesy of a second-half Xandao finish and will be keen to boost morale in their camp after falling from the top of the Premier League table.
Roberto Mancini’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a stern Swansea City and are now one point behind bitter rivals Manchester United on the back of two straight defeats.
Europa League progress would certainly provide a welcome boost to the Citizens and gaining a place in the competition’s quarter-finals could put the club back on track after they appear to be dropping in form.
Regardless of their unfortunate seven days, City are a powerful force to contend with when playing at home and statistics would suggest that the team have a very good chance of winning this week.
The Citizens have scored an average of three goals per game when playing at home this season and defence has been just as impressive with the side leaking just 0.43 goals per game on average.
As such, Sporting seem in for a tough encounter but if their defence can stand as firm as it did in the first leg, they have very decent a decent chance of booking their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Ricardo Sá Pinto’s side have experienced a considerable upturn in form over the last two months and although their domestic campaign may not be going as many would have predicted, the Europa League title would prove a more than worthy alternative and will have a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude heading into this week’s fixture.
Gareth Barry is set for a spell on the sidelines following a troublesome back injury picked up in the defeat to Swansea, while Mancini has indicated that it is too soon for Carlos Tevez to make an appearance in a City shirt.
Vincent Kompany Pablo Zabaleta will also be missing in a weakened City backline with Joleen Lescott still not 100% fit following a groin strain, although the ex Everton man is likely to make the bench.
