Defoe’s Tottenham future in doubt as Spurs chase Gyan

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp could be set to use Jermaine Defoe in a deal to land long-time target Asamoah Gyan.

Spurs have been surprisingly quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but the Sunderland striker is a player that Redknapp admires and he is keen to see him in a Tottenham shirt before the start of the new campaign.

Sunderland are unlikely to let Gyan go lightly though. He was excellent for them last season and with Darren Bent moving on in January, he has become their No.1 striker.

Connor Wickham has been brought in from Ipswich to potentially partner Gyan in attack for the Black Cats, so Steve Bruce will not exactly be open to the idea of letting him go.

However, Spurs could have an ace up their sleeve with the involvement of Defoe in the deal. It is being reported that Redknapp would be willing to offer £5m plus the England striker for the services of Gyan.

This would surely tempt Sunderland. Of course Gyan proved a revelation last year, but it is always more difficult for a player to perform well in their second Premier League season that their first.

Then, in Defoe they have someone who has proven himself at this level over a number of years. Of course he wasn’t involved as much as he would have liked last year, but he could excel week in week out at the Stadium of Light.

Of course this deal is just being rumoured at the moment, but it does make sense. A lot will depend on Bruce’s determination to keep Gyan as his main man and the Sunderland striker’s own personal ambitions.

One thing seems certain. Sunderland’s transfer activity, one way or another, is showing no signs of slowing down.
