Despite comfortably beating Newcastle yesterday to put them on the verge of winning their first ever Premier League title boss Roberto Mancini still believes his side require more firepower and has his eyes set on Van Persie.
It wasn’t until the Italian shifted Yaya Toure into an attacking position and replaced the ineffectual Carlos Tevex that City looked like breaking down the Magpies back four with the Ivorian midfielder scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to seal victory.
But with Tevez’s future at the club shrouded in mystery, along with that of Edin Dzeko and bad boy Mario Balotelli, Mancini wants 37-goal Van Persie at the Etihad Stadium next season.
The 47-year-old requires a striker with a supreme Premier League pedigree to partner leading scorer Sergio Aguero next season and is convinced he can tempt the Dutchman with a lucrative contract offer.
With limitless funds at his disposal Mancini is ready to offer the Arsenal captain a whopping quarter of a million per-week which equates to around £12 million-a-year to swap North London for Manchester.
Van Persie has just a year left on his current deal with the Gunners and has yet to sit down with manager Arsene Wenger and club officials to discuss an extension.
Negotiations have been pencilled in to start after the season has concluded but Mancini wants to nip in before dialogue is opened and present his lucrative offer to the Holland international.
It’s thought City are prepared to pay upwards of £25 million to tempt Wenger into selling his prized asset. The 62-year-old has already concluded a deal Germany striker Lukas Podolski and he won’t let Van Persie go without a fight.
