The much sought Belgian has the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle on his tail but has openly acknowledged that he is hoping for a switch to Spurs.
Vertonghen believes Harry Redknapp’s side is similar to that of Ajax’s and is excited at the prospect of cutting his teeth in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has just a year left on his contract and he hopes the Eredivisie Champions don’t put the North London club off making a bid by sticking a hefty price tag on his head.
He told De Telegraaf newspaper: “Tottenham is a fantastic football club. Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players.
“The board is asking a fair amount for a player who is only contracted for another year. I trust that Ajax and Spurs can turn water into wine and sort it out soon.”
The Belgium international played his 82nd and final game for the Amsterdammers in a 3-1 win at Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday and whilst the defender will leave with a heavy heart he hopes is loyalty will be repaid.
“I owe a lot to Ajax but I have always given my heart and soul.” He said.
“My appreciation for the club and fans is great and it would be terrible if my farewell was marred by Ajax sticking to a great price.
Vertonghen added: “Of course I want Ajax to gain financially but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.”
Whilst admitting that his preferred destination is Tottenham it’s unlikely to deter his other potential suitors.
