Reports are suggesting that Everton’s admirable performances this season may be rewarded in an unfavourable manner as rumours suggest that Chelsea are ready to step up their interest in the signature of Ross Barkley.
The youngster hasn’t played a direct hand in the Toffee’s success this campaign, making most of his appearances for the reserves.
However, that hasn’t stopped some of Europe’s biggest clubs taking notice of Barkley in recent months with Manchester United and Juventus both known to have scouted the starlet.
Chelsea appear set to let go of several midfielders this season and Raul Meireles, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel have all been linked with a departure from Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have made the recent purchases of Kevin de Bruyne and Marko marin, both of whom will arrive at the end of the current season, but seem intent on making further purchases in an effort to bounce back next season.
Barkley has made 22 appearances for Everton in total this campaign, scoring two goals and registering five assists in the process.
David Moyes has warned potential buyers off his youth product for several years now but with the financial state of the club not looking too much better than usual, the Merseysiders could be tempted into cashing in on the 18 year-old.
The playmaker has also made four appearances for the England Under-21 side, last appearing for the Three Lions in February.
Should Chelsea decide to make a move for the teenager, they would be expected to shell out in excess of £14m for Barkley, who is being tipped for a bright future both on a club and international level.
