With the unsettled Edin Dzeko angling for a move away from the Etihad Stadium and Mario Balotelli unofficially for sale manager Roberto Mancini knows he needs to add a proven goalscorer to his striking ranks.
Mancini is a huge admirer of Cavani and wants him to create a devastating partnership top scorer Sergio Aguero next season with a potential Premier League title defence on the agenda.
However any move for the Uruguayan will hinge on Napoli’s participation in the Champions League with the club currently fifth in the table and requiring a third place finish to seal a seat on Europe’s top table.
But with one game of the campaign and remaining and Walter Mazzarri’s side requiring three points to overhaul Udinese and Lazio their hopes are slim.
The Italian’s failure to qualify will open the door for City and Mancini, who could seal their first ever Premier League title with a win at QPR on Sunday, to make their move.
Being crowned champions will certainly go a long way to persuading Cavani to leave the Stadio San Paolo and move to the blue half of Manchester in the summer.
The 25-year-old has certainly enhanced his fearsome reputation on the continent after scoring 32 times in 44 appearances for Napoli this season.
Mancini see’s him as the perfect foil for Aguero and believes the duo could be key to remaining ahead of rivals Manchester United next year as well as delivering the Champions League to Eastlands.
City are well aware that they will have to fork out an extortionate fee to bring Cavani to the club and are already preparing to sell Dzeko to subsidise the deal.
