Everton enter hunt for Wigan wantaway

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it’s looking highly likely that Mohamed Diamé will flee the Wigan Athletic ship this summer and Everton are the latest candidates to clinch his signature.

The Senegalese international has played less of a role at Wigan in the past six months due to his fleeting allegiances but has nonetheless proven himself to be a top Premier League talent.

Everton have had a successful season despite their financial struggles but it’s exactly those struggles that look likely to haunt them again this summer.

The likes of Jack Rodwell, Leighton Baines, Ross Barkley and Phil Jagielka have all been linked with moves away from Goodison Park and in order to balance the books, the club may have no choice but to cash in on a few of their stars this summer should the right offer arise.

Original reports last year were claiming that Diamé would only depart the DW Stadium if the Latics saw the drop but it now seems as if the anchorman will move on regardless of the fact that the Lancashire outfit have seen a massive turnaround in the last two months, earning salvation.

The Senegalese international was being valued at around £7m in January and would undoubtedly be a bargain for any side that does manage to snap him up in July.

Although the Toffees would receive substantial amounts of money for any of the aforementioned stars being linked with an exit, that money wouldn’t necessarily be ploughed back into transfer funds and free transfers will still play a part in Everton’s plans.

As a result of his refusal to pen a new contract at Wigan, Diamé has made just 18 starts this campaign, scoring three goals in the process.

The 24 year-old has also been associated with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal in recent months and will have a pick of his next destination if he does indeed move on in the summer months.
