Chelsea move for Hazard after Champions League success

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signature of Eden Hazard after submitting a formal bid for the Lille star in the wake of their Champions League triumph.

A source close to SqueakyBumTime has revealed that owner Roman Abramovich determined to beat Manchester City to his signature and is prepared to do whatever it takes to bring the Belgian wonderkid to Stamford Bridge.

It was thought Premier League champions were the frontrunners for his signature but Abramovich has now put the Blues in pole position after enticing the 21-year-old with a lucrative financial package.

Hazard refused to comment on speculation over his future after bagging a hat trick during his final game for Lille on Sunday but after speaking to teammate and former Blues star Joe Cole, on a season-long loan from Liverpool, he’s ready to make the switch to West London.

It’s expected that his representatives will meet with Chelsea on Monday to discuss terms over the transfer with a £30 million price tag being mooted for a player that scored 20 goals and set up 17 this season to secure Champions League qualification for Les Dogues.

Speaking to Sky Sports News Lille managing director Frederic Paquet confirmed the Blues were in the running to sign him saying: “I think so. From what I know I think there are maybe four teams interested in him. At this moment we don’t know.”

The Ligue 1 player of the year is unlikely to be the only arrival at the club this summer as Abramovich plans a major squad overhaul despite not having a permanent manager in place with Stevan Jovetic, Hulk, Cheick Tiote and Ezequiel Lavezzi on his shopping list.

Interim coach Roberto Di Matteo delivered the trophy the Russian oligarch has craved since his takeover in 2003 but his future in the dugout is far from certain.

The same can be said for Michael Essien, Florent Malouda, Jose Boswinga and Raul Meireles who have been deemed surplus to requirements by the billionaire as he looks to revamp the Chelsea squad.
