Sagna confident Arsenal will hang on to Van Persie

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna is optimistic that captain Robin Van Persie will sign a new deal and remain with the club beyond this summer the Mirror reports.

Speculation that the Dutchman will leave the Emirates Stadium in the close season continues to rise with Premier League champions Manchester City reportedly monitoring his contract talks.

The 28-year-old has yet to commit his future to the Gunners with whom he scored 30 Premier League goals this season helping them to pip North London rivals Tottenham to third spot and automatic Champions League qualification.

And Sagna is quietly confident Van Persie will put pen-to-paper and stay at Arsenal.

He said: “I’m confident Robin will stay. He was a complete professional from the beginning until the end (of the season) and helped us into third.

“We want to keep him. Everyone is so grateful to him for what he’s done for the club and how important he is.

“He is our captain and takes his role and responsibilities very seriously. He gives everything as a player and captain.”

The Frenchman is currently recovering from a broken leg sustained in the game with Norwich earlier this month and is playing close attention to Arsene Wenger’s transfer activity.

German international Lukas Podolski has already joined the club from Cologne whilst rumours persist that Yann M’Vila is Wenger’s next target and Sagna believes the Rennes star would be a great addition.

“We want more players to come to the team. Lukas Podolski has arrived already and he is a German international and a quality player.” Sagna said.

“M’Vila can make a great impact. I’m not sure about his English but it took me time to learn. But I think he would suit us as well. Arsenal is a French-speaking team and it will help him settle.

“I think we can be contenders this coming season. We showed a lot of people what we could do last season.”
