Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is chasing an experienced striker as he plans for life back in the Premier League after they beat Blackpool in the play-off final.
Reports had been linked him to Michael Owen after Manchester United released the 32-year-old former England frontman.
But it’s now emerged that Yakubu is top of Allardyce’s summer shopping list with reports suggesting he could pick the striker up for a nominal fee of around £1 million.
The Blackburn forward became the first member of the Rovers dressing room to publicly disclose his intentions to leave Ewood Park and return to the top flight next term.
Rovers lost their Premier League status after a disastrous campaign and are now preparing for life in the second tier of English football for the first time in 11-years.
The Nigerian struck 18 times for the club following a move from Everton on the final day of the summer transfer window with his goal scoring efforts proving to be in vain and has now admitted that he isn’t prepared to drop down and play in the Championship.
Yakubu could be joined at Upton Park by another former Toffees forward in the form of Saha after it was revealed he would be released just five months after moving arriving at Tottenham a free transfer.
The 33-year-old Frenchman scored four times in 12 appearances for Spurs but has been deemed surplus to requirements by boss Harry Redknapp and it’s thought Allardyce is willing to snap him up for nothing.
However it’s likely the 57-year-old will have to trim his squad to bring the duo on board and that could potentially spell the end for Sam Baldock, Carlton Cole and Frédéric Piquionne’s West Ham careers.
