Douglas talks up Newcastle move

Twente defender Douglas has revealed that he wants to leave the club this summer and that Newcastle are just one of the clubs who are chasing his signature Sky Sports understands.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew is desperate to sign a new centre back in the close season as he prepares to lead his side into the Europa League and has his eyes set on acquiring the 24-year-old Brazilian.

Douglas is keen to leave the Eredivise side and test himself in a different country after five years in Holland and has already rejected an approach from champions Ajax.

The Premier League looks to be his likely destination although he admitted there are five ‘bigger’ teams than Newcastle vying for his services.

He told NuSport. “I have personally been in touch with Ajax and immediately said that I’m not interested.

“I want to go abroad as I have outgrown the league. I noticed this year that I am sometimes a little too easy going down, then you make mistakes. I want to be tested every week.

“I have spent five years [at Twente] and have done my best for the club. I have won the title, the cup – it’s time for a next step.

“Five clubs are interested and there’s a bigger club than Newcastle. I cannot still say anything about it, but I hope soon to have my new club.”

West Brom midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu has also claimed that he could be moving to Tyneside after confessing that he’s been in talks with the Toon Army as well as Tottenham and hopes to be at a new club by next season.

“We have already started talking to teams like Newcastle and Tottenham,” Mulumbu told Mercato 365.

“For now, I’m leaving it all in the hands of my agent and I hope to have good surprises on my return from vacation.”
