Tottenham playmaker Van der Vaart has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane and Stevens is keen to be reunited with the 29-year-old in Gelsenkirchen having coached him during a spell in charge of Hamburg.
The Holland international’s agent Robert Geerlings revealed the Bundesliga sides intentions to sign him but has played down speculation that he could leave Spurs declaring his happiness to remain in North London.
Despite this Stevens asserted that Van der Vaart is on his shopping list and is prepared to ‘pay a ransom’ to bring him back to Germany four years after he left to sign for Real Madrid.
“His qualities are unprecedented. I would love to work with him again. We have contacts with his agent. Every day I speak to Horst Heldt [Schalke’s general manager] on the phone about our plans,” he said.
“There are rumours circulating that Rafael would return to Germany. But I have not heard from his mouth. I have not spoken with him and we’ll have to see after Euro 2012 .
“He has a contract so we will have to pay a ransom. If Rafa really wants it, he is welcome. If that opportunity arises, and he looks forward to it, let him come.”
Stevens also let slip that he is chasing Ivory Coast international Kalou following his release from Chelsea and is determined to beat Liverpool to his signature.
“Kalou is a Bosman player this summer,” he said.
“It’s obvious; there are many other clubs keen on him. Liverpool for example. But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This could be our chance!”
