Rafael set for new Man Utd deal amid Chelsea interest

Manchester United are set to offer Rafael a new deal to stay at Old Trafford after the defender was the subject of interest from Chelsea the Metro understands.

The 21-year-old has matured into the first choice right back for United and the Brazilian national side  following a series of solid displays over the last 12-months.

Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to reward the former Fluminense youngster with an improved contract to remain with the Red Devil’s and talks have reportedly been ongoing for weeks.

Rumours that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would try to tempt Rafael to Stamford Bridge to solve his problematic right back slot has seen negotiations suddenly accelerate.

And agent Cassiano Pereira has quashed speculation over a move to the Blues insisting his client wants to remain with United for the foreseeable future and is happy that is performances are to be rewarded.

“Rafael is very happy to stay at Manchester United, who are one of the giants of world football and always play in Europe’s biggest competitions,” he said.

“Manchester United are the club that opened the door to Europe for him. He is loved, respected and has prestige at the club. We are all very happy that he is renewing his contract.”

Pereira also represents Rafael’s twin brother Fabio Da Silva and confirmed that the versatile youngster is on the verge of leaving Old Trafford on loan after a injury ravaged four years.

Queens Park Rangers are favourites to land him ahead of Benfica and Borussia Monchengladbach the FIFA agent told ESPN.

“He is a sought-after player because he is still young, and we think that his transfer to QPR was the best decision at the time,” he said.

“He preferred to stay in England to remain in touch with the country’s football style and so that he would not have a problem to adapt to it when he returned to United.”
