Modric is said to be determined to join the Spanish champions this summer but they’ve been unable to match Spurs’ asking price which is believed to be around the £40 million mark.
Roberto Di Matteo is now prepared to nip in with a cash-plus-player offer of his own that could entice former Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas into letting the Croatian international leave White Hart Lane.
Having failed to sign the 26-year-old last year owner Roman Abramovich is determined not to let Modric slip through his fingers once again and will pull out all the stops to bring him to West London.
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has played down rumours that he is poised to join former England colleague David Beckham in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy.
The 34-year-old’s contract expires next summer whilst he and his agent Steve Kutner were recently seen sitting with Beckham at an MLS game sparking talk that he would be moving to the United States.
However Lampard has played down talk that he could leave Chelsea insisting that his meeting with the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star in Los Angeles was purely coincidental.
But Lampard said in The Sun: “There’s nothing in that at all. I’m here in Los Angeles on holiday with [fiancee] Christine. We got engaged here last year and we love it over here.
“Steve’s over here a lot on music and football business. He organised a box so we could go to see the Galaxy game.
“Becks was suspended for the match, so he came and sat with us and we had a good laugh – that’s all.”
