Fernando Torres could miss Chelsea’s game with Stoke City on Sunday after he suffered concussion while on international duty with Spain.
The striker was taken to hospital after a collision in 14th minute of Spain’s 2-1 defeat to Italy on Wednesday. He will undergo medical tests ahead of a decision being made on his involvement this weekend.
This is a significant blow for Torres who would have been aiming to start the season in a positive light following a run of just one goal in 18 games following his £50m move from Liverpool in January.
The Spaniard has quite a lot to prove in the coming months and there are plenty of reports that he has yet to convince new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas that he deserves a place in the starting eleven.
If the World Cup winner misses Sunday’s clash against the Potters, it puts him on the back foot from the word go. He will be playing catch up during the first few weeks of the season and this isn’t ideal.
The fact that the injury was sustained during a friendly fixture just a few days before the season makes it even more frustrating. The timing of the international matches had already been questioned.
Torres will hope this isn’t an incident that sets the tone for his season. He will want to be amongst the top goalscorers in the Premier League this season.
Lots of people have doubted his ability and questioned whether he has lost the ability to find the back of the net regularly, but Torres will want to be up there with Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie as players chasing the golden boot.
As for Chelsea as a whole, a trip to the Britannia Stadium this weekend is a very tough start for Villas-Boas and a very difficult introduction to football in England.
