Rafa Benitez’ side put the disappointment of back to back defeats to Juventus and Parma behind them on Monday with a 4-2 win over Lazio.

The win kept them third in the table, six points behind leaders Juventus and restored confidence in the camp.

Summer signing Gonzalo Higuain broke his five game goal scoring drought with a brace to take his tally to 10 for the season in all competitions and the former Real Madrid man was delighted to be back amongst the goals.

“I am delighted to have helped the team win,” the summer signing from Real Madrid said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It was a very important result.

“It had been a while since I scored but it hasn’t been a big weight on me because I’ve had the trust of everyone and I’ve always been calm.”

With a Champions league tie with Arsenal on the horizon Higuain could be rested for the clash with 13th place Udinese.

Udinese meanwhile have won just two of their last five games but will buoyed by the narrow defeat to Juventus last time out. An injury time winner from Fernando Llorente condemned the club to an agonising defeat.

In Saturday’s other game, Liverno manager Davide Nicola will head into the must-win clash with AC Milan with the backing of his president, Aldo Spinelli.

The club have won just once in their last 11 games and suffered their third straight loss against Chievo last weekend.

However in a statement released by the club, Nicola has received the backing of the board
“Regarding reports in the Italian press of an eventual coaching change at Livorno, club president Aldo Spinelli wants to clarify that the Amaranto club has never contacted, nor thought of contacting, other coaches.

“Our group has been created following the project indicated by our coach Nicola and, up to Sunday’s game against Chievo, the team has produced good performances.”

Milan meanwhile will be full of confidence heading in the game after two wins on the trot. The club followed up a 3-0 win over Celtic with a Mario Balotelli inspired 3-1 win over Catania.

The win was their first in five league games and moved the club up to 8th in the table 10 points behind fourth place Inter.
