The Milan derby is the highlight of the Serie A weekend although compared to previous clashes between the two great rivals, both AC and Inter will head into the game well of the pace at the top.
Inter, the home team, are currently fifth in the table with AC 10th, 24 points off top spot and in the midst of their worst start to a campaign for 30 years.
Both sides have shown mixed form of late with just a win apiece in their last five games although Inter president Erick Thohir is not worried about the club’s poor run.
“I’m not worried by the team’s results,” Thohir said.
“I trust the players. I think they’re giving their best. I also think the game between us and Napoli (Inter lost 4-2) was a good game.
“This is one of the most important games of the year. I can’t wait for it to arrive. I’m going to be at the stadium and certainly it would be beautiful to win it, but we mustn’t underestimate Milan because they also have a good side.
“I hope our coach and team arrive at the game well prepared. I know it won’t be easy, but we’ve got to give it our best.
“Italian football is not easy, but I do think we’re preparing well for the derby.”
By contract Rossoneri goalkeeper Christian Abbiati believes that his side need the three points more than their rivals telling ACMilan.com “We are more in need of a victory than they are,”
“Inter are nine points clear of us.
“However, our (2-2) result against Roma on Monday has given us a big boost in confidence ahead of the derby.
“It would be fantastic to go into the Christmas break with a victory and more so a derby win.
“I don’t look at the standings as the last time I did, I felt like crying.
“I suffer looking at the table because we have had a first half of the competition not of the standard of Milan.”
With Juventus taking control of the league both sides a result and they will also hope that Atalanta’s formidable home form can also help them.
Serie A’s 13th place club have lost just once all season at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and have already drawn at home with Inter and Roma.
Second place Roma will hope to keep the pressure on when they take on Catania. Rudi Garcia’s side are the only unbeaten team in Serie A but a run of five draws in their last 6 games has seen them relinquish top spot and slip 5 points behind the leaders.
Elsewhere Torino will put their four game unbeaten run on the line when they take on Chievo while improving Sampdoria face Parma in what looks an intriguing clash.
Sampdoria have picked up 8 points from a possible 12 in recent weeks while Parma are unbeaten in their 6 games in all competitions, four of which have ended in a draw.
Sassuolo face a tricky task against 4th place Fiorentina while Hellas Verona take on Lazio.
On Saturday Livorno take on an Udinese side without a win in their last three league games while Napoli will hope to follow up their 4-2 win over Inter last time out with another win against Cagliari.
