Both sides will head into the game on the back of disappointing European results, with Napoli bowing out 3-2 on aggregate against Porto after a 2-2 draw at home and Fiorentina going down 1-0 to Juventus at home, the 1-1 in the away tie proving futile.

While their European campaigns may have ended for this season there is still plenty left to play in Serie A with this game serving as a dry run ahead of the Coppa Italia final in May.

There is also of course the small matter of Champions League qualification up for grabs with fourth place Fiorentina currently 10 points behind Napoli.

A recent wobble has dented the Tuscan outfit’s hope of a return to Europe’s Premier competition with Vincenzo Montello’s side winning just one of their last five games, a 3-1 success over Chievo last time out.

By contrast Napoli will head into the game with just one defeat in their last 15 league games, a surprise 3-0 defeat away to Atalanta. The club are unbeaten in their last 6 games and will head into the clash on the back of a 1-0 win away to Torino.

The club have lost once all season at the Stadio San Paolo, going down 1-0 to Parma in November and they have already beaten Inter, Roma and AC Milan in front of their home fans.

Rafa Benitez side, like Fiorentina, are keen to grab all three points especially with the club just three behind second place Roma, and another massive tie with Juventus looming.

Marek Hamsik and Jose Callejon will both hope for starts after starting the clash with Porto on the bench while 23 year old attacker Duvan Zapata will hope his injury equaliser against the Portuguese sees him come into contention.

Fiorentina meanwhile had defender Gonzalo Rodriquez sent off in their 1-0 loss to Juventus. The Argentine defender’s red card made all the worse when Andrea Pirlo curled home the winner from the free-kick.

The club skipper will be free to play on Sunday however with the ban only applicable for any European games.

Napoli won 2-1 when the two sides met in October with Dries Mertens scoring the winner.
